Ralph Hotere Musuem of Contemporary Art

This second-year design project was a finalist in the Design Institute of New Zealand BEST Design Awards in the Student Spatial category in 2023. The design called for a cultural institute in the heart of Dunedin, featuring a permanent Ralph Hotere Collection. The building includes temporary gallery areas, a permanent exhibition, a café, a gift shop, a rooftop bar, a small event space for performances and film screenings, and a classroom space to accommodate a diverse range of users. The monolithic form of the building draws from the local architectural context and responds to the city's character. The design is primarily inspired by the surrounding terrain, with its dynamic geometric form reflecting the rhythm of time and the landscape's historical shaping, which is also echoed in the museum's interior.
